On Tuesday April 14th, our girls team took part in the FAI Louth Schools soccer competition in Oriel Park, Dundalk. They represented themselves and the school with great distinction and were model students in every respect – hard work, teamwork, fair play, respect and a determination to succeed were all worthy traits to observe on a day when all 8 girls contributed to what was a wonderful team effort which was rewarded with a run to the semi-finals – the furthest any team in our short school history has progressed.

Pitted in the opening match against Dulargy NS, our girls stormed to a stunning 5-2 victory with goals from Momil, Ella, Oyin and two from Jessica. Up next was St. Oliver’s Carlingford as both teams played a very even first half where a solitary Momil goal was all that separated the sides. In the 2nd half however, Aston Village were inspired by a swerving Ronaldo-like free kick from Claire, and we eased to a 5-0 victory with further goals from Jessica and a brace from Ella.

The final group match, with a place in the quarter finals at stake, was against an extremely competitive St. Patrick’s Monasterboice who had also won both of their matches scoring 16 goals in the process. It was in this game that our girls battling qualities really came to the fore – having conceded 2 goals, Aston Village worked their way back into the game with goals from Oyin and Jessica to level up the match a 2-2 and earn a place in the quarter finals against Group B winners St. Paul’s Walshstown. In what was a tight and nervy affair, our girls had the upper hand but couldn’t find the breakthrough until Ella scored an audacious lob over the keeper from near the halfway line, which was enough to seal a 1-0 win and a place in the semi-finals.

In an unfortunate first half, we conceded three goals without reply to Rampark NS, and at half time we sat down and decided we had nothing to lose and we were going to give it our all. In a powerful second half display, we turned the tables on our opponents and brought it back to 2-3 following goals from Ella and Jessica. Unfortunately though, it wasn’t to be and despite hitting the bar and the post late on, we couldn’t find the goal that would have taken us to extra time.

But our girls can go home proud of their achievements and with an experience they will be able to look back on fondly. 5 different girls contributed on the scoreboard, including 5 goals a piece from Ella and Jessica. Megan ran herself into the ground with a series of box-to-box performances, Oyin performed remarkably both in goal and outfield, while Lota, our sole 5th class representative, defended so heroically that she remarked that she might have a few bruises this evening! All this was complimented by the incredible work rate and heart of our captain Nife, who also provided another favourite moment of the day when, in the spirit of fair play, she applauded a save made by our opponent’s goalkeeper. For these reasons and more, it has been a pleasure to coach this team and I wish them every success in the future as they progress from Aston Village ETNS to secondary school.
