Fundraiser
It has come to our attention that a family in our school community has been adversely affected by the recent destructive earthquake in Turkey.
Murat Bozkaya, father of Antonio and Leylana in Senior Infants, has flown to the village of Ercis/Van, his own village, to help with the rescue efforts. People are still being rescued. The village is 33 hours by bus from Istanbul. As winter closes in, the conditions are going to get very poor indeed and they will need blankets, tents, food and medicine.
Only this morning the earthquake struck again, creating further devastation. This particular tragedy is not receiving much attention in the press.
It had been our intention to organise a school fundraiser by the end of this term already– the new school extension is fantastic but it has increased our overheads and we have no additional funding towards this. We are now going to have a combined fundraiser, with the help of Murat’s wife, Danielle, and his mother-in-law, Eileen Kerrigan. 50% of funds will go to Turkey and 50% will go towards the school. Eileen has asked that funds be channelled through the school. We will lodge any money raised and write a cheque when the funds have been collected. Dermot O’Gara, our chairperson, agrees that this is an emergency situation and that the school community should help. Eileen agrees with us that we should target a charity on the ground to ensure the money goes to work quickly and effectively.
The fundraising event will be a School Disco to be held on Friday 16th December 2011 in our new PE Hall.
Junior Infants – 1st Class 4pm-5pm €3
2nd– 6th Class 5pm-7pm €5
The cost includes a DJ and refreshments and there will also be spot prizes on the night.
We will be looking for parents to help with supervision at the event and we are also looking for donations for spot prizes. These can be dropped into either John or Antonia in the school office. More details will follow over the coming weeks.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Fr. Kenny of St. Peter’s church for their contribution of €170 and the Borza family who donated €50.
