We have been busy engaging in the lessons and designing a mural which the children have completed as our entry to the Someone Like Me art competition, raising disability awareness amongst primary school children. Following our class discussions on their understanding of disabilities and learning about hidden disabilities in addition to those the children were already aware of we combined elements from the children’s drawings and they drafted them onto the wall outside our classroom. Everyone participated in the mural, using paint pens, sponge painting, stencils, freehand sketching and writing and application of coloured foils. The elements within the heart outer shape represent some of the disabilities the children had identified, and the text is an affirmation of the support and awareness they understand people with these disabilities need. It reads “you can’t see, I see you” , “you can’t hear, I hear you”, ” you can’t walk, I walk with you”, and “gach duine le chéile”. We hope you like our mural.
