Our attention has been drawn to the online Minecraft-inspired game called Roblox, which is particularly popular among students. It is not the only game that joins (sometimes) violent game-play with the facility for the child to engage via chat with other ‘known’ and unknown users. The HSE were made aware on Monday of a parental warning coming from the police in the UK stating that this game is known to “be a place where predators lurk with ill-intent”. In the days leading up to Safer Internet Day (http://www.saferinternetday.ie) on February 6th, we are asking that where necessary, parents and guardians make efforts to become more aware of what their children are playing/perusing online and what contacts their children make online, if any.
In school, we refer to responsible, positive Digital Citizenship and the online skills and behaviours that this entails.
Thankfully, there are many excellent resources in Ireland that are there to guide and advise parents on safer Internet use for their children. We strongly recommend that parents visit some of these resources at  Webwise Ireland and that you share this information with others.
